Northampton School for Boys is equipped with first class facilities to cater for all aspects of the PE curriculum. The school is blessed with beautiful grounds, a magnificent sports hall, a state of the art swimming pool, a traditional gymnasium, floodlit rubber crumb football pitch, floodlit 1st XV rugby pitch and floodlit tennis courts. The school has close links with the Old Northamptonians Sports Club and has access to their facilities.


All students in Years 7 - 11 follow a programme of 2 ¼ hours curricular PE every week.

At Key Stage 3 students follow a broad and prescribed curriculum of activities based around major games , swimming, athletics and health & fitness. At Key Stage 4 students follow a similarly prescribed curriculum based on major and alternative games, health & fitness, swimming and water polo activities.

At Years 12 and 13 students engage in 1 ½ hours of structured physical activity every week in the compulsory Sport & Recreation lesson. The aim of these lessons is to encourage the Sixth Form students to maintain an active lifestyle beyond the years of compulsory Physical Education. Groups follow optional programmes based around fitness yoga and games.

There is a thriving A Level Physical Education course available to students in Years 12 and 13. The course follows the OCR exam board and attracts both internal and external students, producing good value added results year on year. Extra-Curricular Activities

Offering an excellent selection of sports clubs which welcomes all standards of competitors, the NSB PE team are supported by well-qualified, experienced coaches in many areas, who are dedicated to improving the already high standards of sport at the school.

Competitive teams represent the school at Football, Basketball, Rugby, Cross-Country, Table Tennis, Netball, Hockey, Swimming, Water Polo, Athletics, Cricket, Golf and Tennis. Beyond this there are clubs in Hurling, Gaelic Football, Softball, Fitness, Beginners Swimming and Badminton.

School Success

In 2014 and 2015, the School was awarded 'State School of the Year for Sport' in the School Sport Magazine, in recognition of the breadth and success of the extra-curricular programme.

The school has a huge Inter-house programme with over 70 competitions across the range of age groups and activities. The annual Sport Day at the school is a whole school affair, with every student in Years 7 – 10 active, Year 12 students leading activities and members of staff umpiring and officiating.

In addition to the curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities, there have been numerous sports tours that have taken place, travelling all over the world. The U13 Football and Basketball teams tour Phoenix and Los Angeles, USA annually. There is a Ski trip during February half term travelling by coach to Italy or Austria. The cricket team has toured to Grenada, West Indies, often during the Easter break. There have been rugby tours to South Africa, Canada and New Zealand.

Over recent years the school has experienced enormous success in a variety of sports on County, Regional and National level.

NSB named as Top Boys State School for Sport 2015 in Great Britain by School Sport Magazine.
Edward Cripps Human Performance Centre opened by Rebecca Adlington in December.
