National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships 2017
NSB Indoor Rowers Excel at National Championships
On Friday 17th March sixteen students set off at 7.00am for the Lee Valley Athletics Centre, London, to compete in the ‘biggest indoor rowing competition in the world’. Over 2300 hopefuls contested individual and team relay events to try to become a national champion at various age groups. Individual events for Years 7 to 11 involved timed races over 2 to 6 minutes respectively, where rowers set their greatest distance, while Years 12 and 13 competitors had to row a distance of 2000m as quick as possible.
Entrants came from School Sports Partnerships, rowing clubs, academy chains, youth organisations and individual schools. Most were composite teams, organisations that had specialist rowing programmes or elite clubs such as Leander Rowing Club, who boast several past or present Olympic gold medallists amongst their members. The competition was going to be intense, and for NSB to perform so well is a testament to the attitude, effort, skill and fitness exhibited by the rowers on the day.
