NSB Club La Santa 2016
Every year since 2000, a group of NSB students and staff have made the trip out to Club La Santa on the island of Lanzarote. CLS is one of the world's premier warm weather training facilities and is used by many of the top triathletes, cyclists, Formula One drivers, swimmers and other teams in world sport. We even got to meet Thomas Rohler, Olympic Javelin Champion who was on a training camp.
This year the group was made up of rugby players, track and field athletes, basketballers and hockey players to name but a few sports and all were able to take advantage of some fantastic weather. The range of sporting expertise and experience within the group was not necessarily suited to the more endurance activities that we would focus on throughout the week long trip. However it soon became very clear following the first 3km run on the Friday morning that the group would gel quickly and would support each other through each of the activities.
The Duathlon (2.5km run - 15 km bike - 2.5km run), Aquathlon (200m swim - 3km run), 2000m row challenge, Gym tests, NSB's version of Ryder Cup, 22km Mountain bike trip over some very demanding terrain and various early morning runs and swims were all used to build up to the finale - the Triathlon! This involved a 400m swim, 15km bike ride up the side of a volcano and 5km run finishing on the track in the centre of the complex. Many chose to compete as individuals but everyone was at least involved as part of a team. This really summed up the whole week. Everyone supported each other, got involved and worked hard, and all left with a good understanding of the importance of cardiovascular fitness and how to improve it in their sport and everyday life.
Particular mention to Liberis finance who kindly sponsored the t-shirts and to Mr Peter Bason - Chair of Governors. Peter has been on every trip to CLS and this year, having celebrated a 'big' birthday, challenged himself by completing the Duathlon, Aquathlon and Triathlon on his own. He was an inspiration to everyone, including his travelling entourage.
“This was one of the best NSB groups ever to go to Club La Santa. They all mucked in to support each other and challenge themselves. Everyone was pushed well out of their 'comfort zone' and has benefitted greatly from the whole experience. A great trip!”
