NSB Ski Trip 2017
San Simone, Italy 2017
At 2.00pm on Friday 10th February, 80 excited NSB students departed from the Sports Hall on the long coach journey to Italy, to take part in the 2017 school ski trip. This is never an easy journey, 24 hours sat on a coach, watching first British traffic, then the fields of Northern France pass by, before falling into a fitful sleep and waking to find we are deep in the Swiss Alps; there is snow everywhere and we are making good progress towards our destination.
San Simone and Foppolo in the Val de Brembana, North of Bergamo and in the mountains above the water plant at San Pelligrino, has been our destination for the ski trip on 5 previous occasions. It is a good destination, particularly for beginner groups and with over 50 of our students being first time skiers it is a resort that matches our needs well.
That said, in the weeks leading up to the trip, the area had seen no snowfall of note, at any point through the winter. Relief unbridled then, when with only a matter of days to go the snows came and the mountains, which had up to that point been a mix of greens, greys and browns, were painted fresh white just in time for our arrival.
The students enjoyed 6 days of lessons, with 5 hours tuition on each day. All of the students made tremendous progress across the week. We had regular falls and the occasional wipe out (Mr Winfield…), but thankfully no injuries. The weather was fantastic, the snow was excellent and it was smiles all round as the week progressed and the groups went first higher up, and then faster down the mountains.
Our skiing was based entirely in Foppolo this year, though we enjoyed the obligatory afternoon’s tobogganing in San Simone. Once again the hospitality at Hotel San Simone was fantastic and merited our repeat returns. The hot pasta lunches in Foppolo were also a welcome break and provided a good opportunity to share stories of the morning’s exploits and ‘catch a few rays’ on the sun terrace.
Taylor Hollobon was this year’s star skier at the slalom, posting a time which bettered that of all other racers from the school and won him the coveted Gold medal for 2017.
Places will soon be available for skiing 2018 and once again the trip will be open to skiers of all ages and abilities. Watch this space...
