Iceland 2019

A group of twenty Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 students went on a 5-day trip to Iceland over half-term. We did so many different activities and saw so many different things, it is hard to say what was the best bit…

The highlights were exploring a lava cave, bathing in hot, natural springs and hot tubs back at the accommodation, seeing numerous waterfalls, getting up close to a glacier, exploring the rock formations on the beach on the southern-most tip of Iceland, walking round the rim of a volcano crater, watching geysers erupt and mud pools bubbling and steaming, visiting a lava centre and actually seeing molten lava pouring into the room, seeing the fissures formed by the movement of tectonic plates. The list is breath-taking. The trip culminated in exploring the sights that the capital, Reykjavík, has to offer.

Our one disappointment was only catching a slight glimpse of the Northern Lights behind the clouds rather than the real thing.

The whole trip was topped off by the superb behaviour of all students and the camaraderie across the year groups.

During the last week in October, I took part in the Iceland field trip with school where we visited all the key sites in the South-Western region of Iceland. I was looking forward to this trip for such a long time as Iceland’s remarkable landscapes have been discussed with excitement at school for as long as I can remember and they definitely lived up to it!

Over the course of the 5 days, we visited so many incredible landmarks and simply breath-taking landscapes that I lost count of them, when we drove past a waterfall or another crack in the ground that seemed to have no end, making Iceland feel prehistoric and untouched by man.

I’m so glad I went for this once-in-a-life time experience, with highlights that include seeing glaciers, skimming stones on the black beach and going into an ancient lava tunnel that has been the hotspot for many Hollywood movies. Moreover, the guides and staff were excellent, with the guides being extremely well learned around their particular landmark in addition to them allowing us the time to take in Iceland’s full glory.

The staff were of course extremely helpful and friendly when trekking up mountains or deep-diving caves and were also encouraging us to really take it all in, which of course we all did.

Overall, Iceland was such an incredible experience and I wish I could relive it all over again and would highly encourage anyone to pursue this journey of a life time.

Being able to see so many spectacular waterfalls is an experience you'd struggle to find anywhere else. Seeing a glacier, boiling mud pools and an erupting geyser, again, is something you I don’t think you can experience anywhere else.

One of the highlights of the week was visiting the Lava Show, the only place in the world where you can feel the heat of molten lava in a safe environment.

We all thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Secret Lagoon, it was a strange experience swimming around in 38 degree temperatures, after walking around in winter coats and woolly hats all day.

The final day was spent exploring the capital, Reykjavik, which was a great end to our marvellous trip. A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Edwards for organising such an amazing trip which we will never forget.
