Year 6 into Year 7 Transition - Parent and Student Information
This section of the Year 6 into Year 7 Transition information is aimed at parents, carers and students. Transitioning from a primary school to a secondary school can be daunting for both parents and students alike. We aim to provide you with information to assist you both with what to expect before joining NSB as a year 7 student.

When does school start?
Wednesday, 4th September 2024, at 8.30am, dressed smartly in your school uniform. The school day finishes at 3.35pm.
School uniform, what do I need on the first day?
Please read the School Uniform and Appearance guidance in the Transition Advice booklet carefully for full details of what you can and can’t wear, haircuts, jewellery etc. Your coloured year stripe should be sewn onto your blazer, across the top of the pocket, above the school badge. Shirts MUST be tucked in and you MUST wear your blazer at all times. Please note your tie and year stripe will be given to you at the Year 7 Intake Evening.
Arriving at school by car – where should I park?
The traffic is really busy in the area, both in the morning and at the end of school, and the Cripps Hall car park is for staff and Sixth Form only and should not be used by parents other than on your Transfer Day. From your first day September we recommend that your parents drop you off and pick you up after school somewhere locally (observing the road traffic regulations), within a short walk from the school. It would be a good idea to practise this during the summer holidays.
Where do I go when I get to school?
On Induction Day, leave your parents and come in through the bus stop entrance. There will be staff waiting to welcome you and direct you to the theatre. After that, you will come in through the normal school entrances (follow all the other boys).
What will I do on Induction Day?
On Induction Day you will have an assembly. You will then go with your form tutor to do a range of activities, including a tour of the school, having your photo’s taken and enjoying a carousel of expressive arts activities.
What do I do if I forget something?
At our Cluster Schools event you will go through how to plan your day and what to pack in your bag. You will be given your timetable on the first day to help you get organised with packing your bag the night before school. You can contact teachers quickly and easily via Microsoft Teams – we will teach you how to use this in September and you will be an expert in no time! What will I do on the first day?
You will go to your form room for the first three periods up to break. During that time, you will be given your timetable. After break you will start your subject lessons.
What do I do about lunch?
We operate a cashless system at school. We will be sending out ParentPay activation letters over the summer holidays, so please keep an eye out for these – they will be posted to your home address. You will need to activate your ParentPay account to enable you to pay for school meals, trips and other items. You can bring a packed lunch or buy food from the canteen. Parents will be sent login details for the Cashless Catering system just before the start of term. You will not be able to pay by cash.
Will I need my PE kit?
You will need to bring PE kit on the days that your timetable says you have PE. Don’t worry about this on your first day.
What about school books?
During the first week or two your teachers will give you your exercise books and also some text books. You will need to bring the right books for your lessons each day. You should bring a school bag to carry these and your other equipment in.
Can I bring my mobile phone?
We recommend that you don’t bring these into school unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to phone home you can do it from Student Services. If you do bring in a mobile phone it is at your own risk and it must not be seen in school because Year 7 are not permitted use of mobile phones on school grounds.
What happens if I get lost finding my way round the school?
Don’t worry – there are plenty of students and staff to help you – just ask!
What happens after the first day?
It will be normal lessons from now on, so check your timetable every evening with your parents and put everything you need for the next day in your bag ready before you go to bed.

Where can I see what I will be studying?
What happens if I am the only person from my primary school and I don’t know anyone?
Many of you will be the only one coming from your primary school but as detailed above, there are lots of opportunities for you to get to know others before September. In your first week, your tutor will also support you in making new friends, finding your way around and understanding your timetable. We also have a fantastic House Leadership Team who are great role-models and will be happy to show you the way and help you settle in.
How will I make friends?
Most boys are in the same situation with worries about how to make friends in the first days and weeks in secondary school. At NSB we have an extensive extra-curricular programme and would encourage students to take part in what NSB has to offer. With over 150 different clubs over the week, we are sure there is something to suit everyone, to help you make friends and settle in.
Wellbeing
Feeling excited or maybe a little anxious are both natural feelings when changing school - if students are feeling anxious, we think the video below may help.
There are plenty of people to talk to at school about any worries you may have; Form Tutors, Year Team Leaders, subject teachers, the Inclusion Team as well as the House Directors, the Student Leadership Group, the Director of PSHE and the Assistant Head responsible for Personal Development.
On our school app, we have the function to report a concern online if you or your child would rather write a concern instead of having a face to face conversation. Wellbeing within our students is very important, so it is vital there are facilities available to voice concerns.
