Northampton School for Boys

Headteacher's Bulletin - Friday, June 7th 2024

The central theme of Personal Development sessions throughout Tutor Time this week has been the 80th anniversary and remembrance of the D-Day landings. The Library also supported the focus on this remarkable historical event with a thought provoking book display, depicting some of the most heroic stories of Operation Overlord.

On the theme of World War, Year 8 students have been studying World War 1 in detail, culminating in a House Competition based on the work undertaken in class. Miss Imison, Curriculum Team Leader for History, reports:

During Terms 4 and 5, Year 8 have been working hard to study the causes of World War One, the conditions in the trenches and most recently what life was like on the Home Front - particularly in Northamptonshire. We also looked at some of the students who volunteered for the war that were students of Northampton School for Boys. With this in mind we asked the boys to design a propaganda poster, aimed at persuading the young men of Northamptonshire to join the war effort. While there was tough competition the winners are:

1st Place: Hussain Qureshi (8R) Manley (10 House points)

2nd Place: Hargun Singh (8P) Brightwell (7 House points)

3rd Place: Euan Fraser (8S) Washington (4 House points)

We would like to take this opportunity to say well done and thank you to all those students who participated and a huge congratulations to Hussain who was our chosen winner. "

Following on from the tremendously successful visit of Lady Dorfman last term, our Dance Department has continued to go from strength to strength with a large number of former and current students forging impressive tracks in the competitive professional world of the Performing Arts. Miss Clinton (Dance Learning Leader) reports:

Over the last few months former students of the school have been working in the wider professional dance industry in a variety of ways.

Angus Simpson danced for Poland's entry Luna for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Elise Clinton, Angus Simpson and Gio Bordone have recently filmed for The Voice BBC.

Charlie Goddard will be travelling with Anne Marie as a dancer on her new tour.

Lewis Simpson recently worked with Dua Lipa recording an acoustic version of her song 'Training Season'.

Steven Thompson has just returned from the world tour of 'Message in a Bottle' dancing with the Kate Prince Company.

Many of our talented current Key Stage 5 dance students have secured places at nationally acclaimed dance schools and conservatoires to continue their training in dance and musical theatre once they have finished their A Level studies.

Charlie O'Neill - Rambert Dance School (Charlie is leaving us a year early due to the world acclaimed Rambert Dance recognising his immense talent and potential)

Isabel Robinson - Bird College

Emily Montford - Performers College

Lily Pearson - London Contemporary School of Dance

Beatriz Kingsmill-Smith - Urdang

Haiden Battison - Guildhall

Esme Nightingale - Creative Academy

Many congratulations to Year 11 student Cameron McKenzie who recently competed in the hugely prestigious National Schools Regatta at the London Olympic venue - Dorney Lake in the 2000m Pairs event. Cameron and his partner rowed brilliantly to make the elite 'A' Final from a field of 32 in which they finished a highly credible fifth in the country, which gives them a fighting chance of selection for the Great Britain v France international fixture in July.

We are immensely proud of our record in National and County Cup school cricket competitions, where we more than hold our own against leading schools from the private sector. The U13s had a tremendous run in the National Cup, reaching the Quarter Finals before bowing out on Monday against King Edward's School, Birmingham. The U15s lit up a dank day in Oundle on Tuesday when they brought back the County Cup after exceptional wins against Wellingborough School and Oundle School in the Semi Final and Final respectively. They now move on to face Bedford School in the National Cup knockout rounds, which is for the winners of all the various County competitions across England.

Tickets are available from the Box Office for the Summer Ceilidh, Summer concert and our school musical, The Addams Family. Please click the link below for further information.

Finally, the very best of luck to the NSB Folk musicians who will be performing for the general public outside of the Guildhall on Saturday from 1-2pm on Saturday as part of the Northampton Carnival, the 18 NSB students who will be competing in 26 events at the Northamptonshire Track and Field Championships at the Rockingham athletics track in Corby on Saturday and also to the 25 Year 10 students who are undertaking the challenging Silver Duke of Edinburgh Trial Expedition this weekend in Rutland.
