The staff are saying goodbye today to an incredibly loyal and respected member of the NSB Support Staff in Pete Cabassi, who has been a fixture of the NSB Estates Team for the past 34 years. Pete has many fantastic attributes which have made him a true stalwart of the school, not least a fantastic sense of kindness, honesty, reliability and duty - he will be sorely missed in retirement by everyone at NSB.
It was a particularly busy last weekend at NSB.
On Friday night, the First XV put on a great display of rugby to defeat Ipswich School in The Schools Championship in front of a large crowd and live stream audience, with Mr Bradbury also earning great external plaudits for his ever first stint at commentary - a very astute effort!! Throughout Sunday, the NSB Sports Hall was buzzing with the explosion of energy pervading from the first ever Elite Academy Basketball Cup to be held at the school, run by NSB member of staff, Andre Arissol. It was a fantastic competition, featuring the very best U19 basketball teams in the UK, including NSB who fought valiantly in their 3 games. Overall winners were deservedly the Charnwood Riders who won a thrilling final with a 3 point shot edging them ahead by 2 with only seconds remaining.
To top off the weekend, the Cripps Theatre played host to a wonderful NSB Leavers' performance of Shrek The Musical, with outstanding performances from the entire cast. The outgoing Year 13 are fantastically talented, and we sincerely hope that they continue with their performing as they move on to the next stage of their education / training.
Our Year 11 Geography students have been hard at work outside of school. Miss Alderson reports:
This week, our Year 11 students embarked on an exciting field trip to Southwold as part of their GCSE fieldwork studies. Blessed with fantastic weather, the students enjoyed a highly productive and positive educational experience from Wednesday through to Friday.
The trip allowed students to gather valuable data, explore the local geography, and apply classroom learning to real-world settings, all in preparation for their upcoming GCSE exams. Their hard work and enthusiasm was clearly evident throughout the trip, and this will no doubt translate into excellent outcomes in the summer.
Many congratulations to Year 13 student, Indio Whitnell-Monk, who is careering up the ranks of British Weightlifters. Indio is a multi-talented athlete who, in 2022, won the British Schools U18 title in skiing - a sport in which he has also represented Great Britain. Last year, injury put a halt to Indio being able to compete at the highest level in skiing and whilst rehabilitating he turned to weight lifting. Indio entered a regional power lifting qualifier event earlier this year, which he won and this automatically qualified him for the recent British Power Lifting Championships where he placed an impressive 3rd with a total score of 477.5 kgs for his 3 lifts (Squat 172.5kg, Bench 100kg, Deadlift 205kg). As a result of this exceptional achievement, Indio has been selected for the Great Britain team competing at the World Championships in the USA at the end of this year. To represent your country once in a sport is a phenomenal honour, to be selected to represent your country in a second different sport is a very rare and truly stand out achievement.
Congratulations also to Oliver Murphy in Y13 who has recently been selected for the County U18 Tennis Team. Oliver (pictured in black kit), cleaned up in the Northampton Lawn Tennis Club Championships last weekend, winning both the U18 singles and also the doubles where he took the title alongside partner and fellow NSB Y13 student, Stanley Gemmell.
For readers interested in watching some high calibre rugby, the First XV take on The King's School, Macclesfield at 11am on the First XV pitch tomorrow and the Second XV, U16As and U15As also have home games against the high-profile rugby school from Cheshire at 10.30am. The U15 game will be especially intriguing as it is a repeat of the U14 National Cup Semi-Final of last year, which was an incredibly close affair, ending in a 6-3 reverse - the NSB squad will no doubt be extremely keen to exact competitive revenge!
